If you've been comparing crib mattresses, you've probably seen "MADE SAFE certified" stamped next to "GREENGUARD Gold" on the same product listing and wondered whether they mean the same thing. They don't. GREENGUARD Gold tests what a finished mattress emits into the air. A MADE SAFE certified crib mattress has been screened ingredient by ingredient, before assembly, against a list of more than 15,000 chemicals the program has flagged as banned or restricted. EWG does not maintain a ratings database for crib mattresses, so this guide leans on MADE SAFE as its stated certification basis, with GREENGUARD Gold and GOTS named separately wherever a mattress also happens to carry them. What MADE SAFE Actually Certifies (and What It Doesn't)
MADE SAFE® is a nonprofit ingredient-screening certification operated by Nontoxic Certified, the same organization behind the mark you may have seen on shampoo bottles, baby wipes, and cleaning sprays. For a crib mattress, screening covers the finished product's full material list, not a sample of it, and checks each substance against MADE SAFE's Banned/Restricted list of more than 15,000 chemicals linked to concerns including carcinogenicity, endocrine disruption, reproductive and developmental toxicity, and environmental persistence. If a single component fails the screen, the product does not qualify. There is no partial certification.
What MADE SAFE certification does not do: it does not test what the finished, assembled mattress emits into a room air over time. That's a separate question GREENGUARD Gold answers. It does not verify organic fiber sourcing through the supply chain. That's what GOTS covers. And it is not a health or safety guarantee. Crib mattress listings often stack two or three certification names, and it's easy to assume they're duplicates of each other. They're not. Each one tests a different part of the product.
