Search "NSF certified refrigerator water filter" and you'll find dozens of listings using that phrase as a generic badge, with no indication of which numbered NSF/ANSI standard actually applies or which contaminants the certification covers. A filter can be certified for chlorine taste and odor and nothing else, while a nearly identical-looking cartridge from the same brand is also certified for lead, PFOA/PFOS, or pharmaceutical residue. The certification that matters depends on your exact refrigerator model and which cartridge it takes. We checked seven widely sold refrigerator filters directly against NSF's own public certification database, model by model, to confirm exactly what each one is certified for, and matched each to the refrigerator models it fits. (Looking for a pitcher filter instead of a built-in fridge cartridge? See our separate NSF certified water filter pitcher guide.)
What NSF/ANSI 42, 53, and 401 Certification Means on a Refrigerator Filter
NSF International is one of several accredited, independent certifying bodies that test water treatment products against published standards. Three standard numbers show up on refrigerator filter packaging, and they are not interchangeable. NSF/ANSI 42 covers aesthetic effects only, mainly chlorine taste, odor, and particulate. NSF/ANSI 53 covers health-effects contaminants such as lead, certain pesticides, and volatile organic compounds, and certification is granted contaminant by contaminant rather than as a blanket claim. NSF/ANSI 401 covers a separate list of "emerging compounds" (pharmaceutical residues and microplastics, among others), tested and certified independently of Standard 53. A filter certified to all three has still only been tested against the specific contaminants named in its own listing, not every possible contaminant. For a full breakdown of what each numbered standard covers, see our explainer on NSF/ANSI 42, 53, and 58.
We confirmed every pick below directly in NSF's public Certified Drinking Water Treatment Units (DWTU) database, searching by manufacturer name and cross-checking by model number. For each pick, the certificate holder on record is the appliance brand's own corporate entity: Whirlpool Corporation, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., or LG Electronics Inc. Not a third-party aftermarket filter riding on the brand's model number.

EveryDrop Filters 1–5 Are Five Different Filters, Not One
"EveryDrop" is Whirlpool's brand name for its OEM filter line, not one filter. Filters 1 through 5 are five separate models in NSF's database, each with its own certificate and its own contaminant list, mapped to different Whirlpool-family door styles across Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, Amana, and JennAir. Filter 3 is the only one of the five with a PFOA/PFOS reduction claim. Filter 5's Standard 53 list is shorter than the others: it does not include VOC, ethylbenzene, or lindane reduction, so don't assume it matches Filters 1–4 on those contaminants. Matching the correct filter number to your specific fridge model, not just the "everydrop" brand name, is the whole point of this guide.
NSF also lists Filters 1 and 2 under two color-coded sub-models with slightly different exact contaminant lists (a "B" and an "R" variant), and current retail packaging doesn't indicate which one is inside a given unit. The contaminant lists below for Filters 1 and 2 are the intersection confirmed on both variants, so the claim holds regardless of which one you receive; we did not print variant-only contaminants (like a single "reduces styrene" claim) that wouldn't apply to both.
If PFOA/PFOS Reduction Matters Most: everydrop Filter 3 (EDR3RXD1)
Of the five Whirlpool filters checked, the everydrop by Whirlpool Filter 3 (EDR3RXD1) is the only one with a confirmed PFOA and PFOS reduction claim under NSF/ANSI 53. If PFAS is specifically what you're trying to filter out, this is the pick to lead with, and for a broader comparison of PFAS-focused filters across pitcher, refrigerator, and whole-house tiers, see our full guide to PFAS and lead water filters.

If Your Old Filter Was UKF8001: everydrop Filter 4 (EDR4RXD1)
The legacy Maytag/Whirlpool part number UKF8001 does not carry its own genuine-manufacturer NSF certification listing; Whirlpool's current NSF/ANSI 42, 53, and 401 certification for that fitment is registered under its direct replacement, the everydrop by Whirlpool Filter 4 (EDR4RXD1). If your old filter was labeled UKF8001 or UKF8001AXX, EDR4RXD1 is its certified replacement.
Certified for:
NSF/ANSI 42: chlorine, Class I particulate, taste/odor.
NSF/ANSI 53: 2,4-D, asbestos, atrazine, benzene, carbofuran, chlorobenzene, cyst, endrin, ethylbenzene, lead, lindane, mercury, o-/p-dichlorobenzene, tetrachloroethylene, toxaphene, turbidity.
NSF/ANSI 401: atenolol, bisphenol A, carbamazepine, DEET, estrone, ibuprofen, linuron, meprobamate, metolachlor, microplastics, naproxen, nonylphenol, phenytoin, trimethoprim.

Compact & Side-by-Side Models: everydrop Filter 5 (EDR5RXD1)
The everydrop by Whirlpool Filter 5 (EDR5RXD1) fits compact and side-by-side models like the ED5FHGXKQ00 series. Its NSF/ANSI 53 list is shorter than Filters 1–4: it does not include a VOC, ethylbenzene, or lindane reduction claim, so don't carry those over from the other EveryDrop filters when describing this specific model.
Certified for:
NSF/ANSI 42: chlorine, Class I particulate, taste/odor.
NSF/ANSI 53: 2,4-D, asbestos, atrazine, benzene, carbofuran, cyst, lead, mercury, p-dichlorobenzene, toxaphene, turbidity.

Samsung Models: Genuine Filter HAF-CIN/EXP (DA29-00020B)
For Samsung refrigerators, the genuine Samsung filter sold under HAF-CIN/EXP and part number DA29-00020B is certified by Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. directly, confirmed under Samsung's own NSF listing for internal element codes DA97-08006A/-A1/-C, the certified elements packaged inside the retail DA29-00020A/B part number. At $39.00 it's the lowest-priced genuine pick in this lineup. We deliberately did not include several cheaper "DA29-00020B-compatible" listings that don't identify a manufacturer as Samsung on the listing itself: Samsung's NSF certificate covers products it manufactures, not every cartridge shaped to fit the same slot.
Certified for:
NSF/ANSI 42: chlorine, taste/odor, particulate.
NSF/ANSI 53: 2,4-D, asbestos, atrazine, benzene, carbofuran, chlorobenzene, cyst, endrin, ethylbenzene, lead, lindane, mercury, o-/p-dichlorobenzene, tetrachloroethylene, toxaphene, turbidity.
NSF/ANSI 401: atenolol, bisphenol A, carbamazepine, DEET, estrone, linuron, meprobamate, metolachlor, naproxen, nonylphenol, phenytoin, TCEP, TCPP, trimethoprim.
Fits: Samsung side-by-side and French door refrigerators using HAF-CIN/EXP or DA29-00020B (e.g. RF28HMEDBSR, RF263BEAESR, RS25J500DSR, RF263TEAESG, RF4287HARS; Kenmore 46-9101)

LG Models: LT800P (Certified to 42 & 53, Not 401)
The LG LT800P (ADQ73613401, ADQ73613408, ADQ75795104) is genuinely NSF-certified, confirmed under LG Electronics Inc.'s own listing, but only to NSF/ANSI 42 and 53. LG's OEM filter line does not carry NSF/ANSI 401 certification, so unlike the Whirlpool and Samsung picks above, there is no certified microplastics, pharmaceutical-residue, or PFAS reduction claim for this filter. If reducing those specific compounds matters to you and you have an LG refrigerator, that's a real gap this filter's certification doesn't close; it's still independently certified for the contaminants listed below.
Certified for:
NSF/ANSI 42: chlorine, taste/odor, Class I particulate.
NSF/ANSI 53: 2,4-D, asbestos, atrazine, benzene, carbofuran, cyst, lead, lindane, mercury, p-dichlorobenzene, toxaphene.
Not certified to NSF/ANSI 401 No microplastics, pharmaceutical, or additional PFAS reduction claim applies to this model.
Fits: LG French door/side-by-side models (e.g. LMXC23746D/S); Kenmore 9490
Price: $52.69 (~$105.38/yr on a 2-filter/year replacement schedule)

Why GE and Frigidaire Filters Aren't on This List
We checked NSF's database specifically for GE (MWF/MWFP/RPWFE/XWF) and Frigidaire/Electrolux (PureSource) refrigerator filters before finalizing this lineup. Searching under "General Electric," "GE Appliances," "Haier" (GE's appliance division was sold to Haier in 2016), "Frigidaire," and "Electrolux" returned no matching genuine-manufacturer refrigerator-filter listing in NSF's public database. Retailer copy for genuine GE MWF and Frigidaire PureSource filters commonly states "NSF 42 & 53 certified," but we could not independently confirm that claim against NSF's own database under a company name we could identify with confidence. That may mean the certification sits under a contract manufacturer's or prior owner's name we didn't guess correctly, not that no certification exists, but we won't print a certification claim we couldn't verify directly. If that changes on a future check, we'll update this guide rather than take a brand's marketing copy at face value.
How to Find Your Refrigerator's Filter Model
- Check the filter itself. Most cartridges print the model number directly on the housing.
- Check your refrigerator's owner's manual or the manufacturer's model-lookup tool, using your refrigerator's full model number (usually printed inside the fridge compartment or on a sticker near the door hinge).
- If you only know an old or discontinued part number, search for it plus "replacement" to confirm the current certified equivalent: the way UKF8001 maps to EDR4RXD1 above.
How to Verify Any Filter's Certification Yourself
Before buying any refrigerator filter, you can check its actual certified claims directly rather than relying on packaging or marketing copy:
- Go to NSF's public Certified Drinking Water Treatment Units database and search by the manufacturer's name or the exact model number.
- Confirm which standard numbers (42, 53, 401) the exact model is certified under, and which specific contaminants are listed for that certification. A brand appearing in the database for one product does not mean every filter it sells carries the same certification.
- If a filter's claimed certification does not appear under the manufacturer's own name, treat that gap as unconfirmed rather than assuming the packaging claim is accurate.
This is the process we used to confirm each pick above, and it's why GE and Frigidaire filters aren't included in this lineup despite brand-level marketing claims.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What does "NSF certified" actually mean on a refrigerator water filter?
It means an accredited certifier, most commonly NSF International, tested the specific filter model against one or more numbered standards and confirmed it reduces the exact contaminants listed for that certification. NSF/ANSI 42 covers taste and odor only; NSF/ANSI 53 covers health-effects contaminants like lead; NSF/ANSI 401 covers a separate list of emerging compounds. A filter certified under one standard is not automatically certified under the others.
Q: Do all refrigerator filters remove PFOA and PFOS?
No. Among the seven filters we checked, only the everydrop by Whirlpool Filter 3 (EDR3RXD1) has a confirmed PFOA/PFOS reduction claim under NSF/ANSI 53. Check the specific contaminant list for your exact model rather than assuming any "NSF certified" filter covers PFAS.
Q: Is LG's refrigerator filter certified for microplastics or PFAS?
No. The LG LT800P is genuinely certified to NSF/ANSI 42 and 53, but LG's OEM filter line does not carry NSF/ANSI 401 certification, which is the standard that covers microplastics and pharmaceutical residues. There is no certified 401 claim for this model.
Q: My old filter was UKF8001. What do I buy now?
UKF8001 does not have a genuine-manufacturer NSF certification listing under its own part number in NSF's database. Whirlpool's current certified replacement for that fitment is the everydrop by Whirlpool Filter 4 (EDR4RXD1).
Q: Does the Environmental Working Group rate or certify refrigerator water filters?
No. The Environmental Working Group does not rate or certify refrigerator water filters or any other water filter products. For this category, the relevant certifications are NSF/ANSI 42, 53, and 401, granted by accredited bodies such as NSF.
Q: Is a third-party "compatible" filter the same as the genuine certified one?
Not necessarily. Several private-label manufacturers do hold their own separate NSF certifications under their own company name, but a generic cartridge shaped to fit a brand's slot is not automatically covered by that brand's own certificate. Check the specific manufacturer's own NSF listing rather than assuming a compatible cartridge matches the OEM filter's certification.
