Most of what you read about non-toxic cleaning leans on EWG's Guide to Healthy Cleaning. MADE SAFE® is a separate program with its own screening list, and a small number of household cleaners carry its mark. If you searched for MADE SAFE certified cleaning products for the nursery, this guide covers the ones you can actually buy on Amazon today, and it is upfront about how short that list is.

What the MADE SAFE® Mark Screens For, and What It Leaves Out

MADE SAFE® is a nonprofit ingredient-screening program run by Nontoxic Certified. A brand submits a formula, and every ingredient is checked against the program's Banned/Restricted list of substances. One failing ingredient means no mark. The registry now lives at index.madeworks.com, and each product below links its own entry.

The mark is narrower than people tend to assume. It is an ingredient screen. It does not say a cleaner works, kills germs or disinfects. It does not say a product meets any child-poison-prevention or labeling rule. It is not a health or safety guarantee, and it says nothing about how your own child will react to a product. Detergent powders and oxygen boosters are still household chemicals, so follow the label and keep them out of reach of children. For the full breakdown, see our guide to what MADE SAFE certified means.

EWG is not involved in any of this. None of the four products below is presented on an EWG basis, and the MADE SAFE® certification is the only basis stated for each one.

Why the Pool Is Small

We went through MADE SAFE's index looking for household cleaners, not personal care. Three brands turned up. Meliora Cleaning Products and Branch Basics both sell on Amazon. Pure Natural Cleaners, which makes a soapberry-based laundry soap, dish soap and multi-purpose cleaner, is also MADE SAFE® certified, but we could not find an Amazon US listing for it, so there is no link here. You can see its products on the MADE SAFE registry and buy direct if you like. Blueland and Seventh Generation hold MADE SAFE® marks too, but on personal care items such as facial cleanser, body wash and deodorant, not cleaners.

So the honest answer is two brands and four products, covering laundry, scrubbing, stain removal and an all-purpose concentrate.

MADE SAFE® Certified Cleaning Products We'd Buy for the Nursery

Meliora Laundry Powder, Unscented, $25.44

For a nursery, the laundry powder is the easiest place to start, since crib sheets, burp cloths and baby clothes make up most of the washing. Meliora's powder was the first detergent to earn the MADE SAFE® mark. This listing is the Unscented version, so there is no added scent. At about $0.20 per load it is also the cheapest way into the group.

Basis: MADE SAFE® certified. The registry entry covers all current sizes and packaging, plus Lavender, Lemon, Lemon-Lavender-Clove, Peppermint, Spiced Orange and Unscented. Check which scent is on the listing you open.
Does not certify: stain removal performance, disinfection, or any health outcome.

Meliora Gentle Home Cleaning Scrub, Peppermint Tea Tree, $13.44

This is a scouring powder for sinks, tubs, high chair trays and other hard surfaces. One thing to know before you buy: the Amazon listing is the Peppermint Tea Tree scent, so it is scented. If you want a fragrance-free nursery, this is the one product here that does not fit that goal. MADE SAFE® also covers an Unscented version of the same scrub, but that is not the one on this Amazon listing. See our MADE SAFE Certified Cleaning Scrub: Meliora Gentle Home Cleaning Scrub Spotlight.

Basis: MADE SAFE® certified in all current sizes and packaging, including Peppermint Tea Tree and Unscented.
Does not certify: that the scrub disinfects or sanitizes, or that it is suitable for every surface.

Branch Basics Oxygen Boost, 2 lb Bag, $19.99

Oxygen Boost is a powder you add to laundry or use as a soak for whitening and stain treatment. It pairs with any detergent, including the Meliora powder above, which makes it useful for the spit-up and spills that come with a baby. It is the stain-treatment half of the Branch Basics system.

Basis: MADE SAFE® certified in all currently available sizes and packaging, listed in the registry as a stain treatment.
Does not certify: stain-removal results, or suitability for every fabric. Spot-test colored items first, as the label advises.

Branch Basics Concentrate (33.8 oz) + Oxygen Boost (4 lb) Bundle, $77.00

The Concentrate is the product that lets one bottle do several jobs. Branch Basics' own page gives dilution ratios for an all-purpose cleaner, a bathroom cleaner, a foaming hand wash and a laundry soap. Its listed ingredients are water, decyl glucoside, coco-glucoside, chamomile flower extract, sodium bicarbonate, sodium gluconate and sodium citrate, and the page lists no fragrance or essential oils. That makes it the best match here for a fragrance-free nursery. This Amazon listing bundles the Concentrate with a 4 lb bag of Oxygen Boost, and the registry certifies both components separately.

Basis: MADE SAFE® certified. The registry lists The Concentrate (multi-purpose cleaner) and Oxygen Boost each in all currently available sizes and packaging.
Does not certify: that diluted solutions disinfect, or anything about how a diluted mix is stored. Label and mixing directions still apply.

How to Choose Between Them

If your main chore is washing baby laundry and you want the lowest cost per load, start with the Meliora powder. If you would rather own one system that handles laundry, counters, the bathroom and hand washing, the Branch Basics bundle costs more up front but replaces several bottles. The Meliora scrub is the only product here with a scent, so skip it if fragrance is the thing you are trying to avoid. Whichever you pick, store concentrates and powders where a toddler cannot reach them.

If you want an EWG-based view of the same shelf, our non-toxic cleaning products guide and our fragrance-free cleaning products guide use EWG's cleaning ratings as their basis instead. Those are a different certifier with a different method, so the two sets of picks are not interchangeable. For other MADE SAFE® nursery buying, see our MADE SAFE certified baby wash spotlight, and our non-toxic baby registry for the wider list.

Candidates We Left Out

Several other certified listings did not make the guide. Branch Basics' concentrate refill, premium kit and gel hand soap were out of stock on Amazon when we checked, as were Meliora's 500-load laundry powder and its refill bundle. Meliora's all-purpose spray listing was also out of stock. A few multi-item kits on Amazon bundle spray bottles, dish tablets and other accessories beyond the certified formulas, and we could not match the certification scope to those listings, so we skipped them.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does MADE SAFE certified mean on a cleaning product?
It means the formula's ingredients were screened against MADE SAFE's Banned/Restricted list of substances. It is an ingredient screen only. It does not test cleaning performance, disinfection or child-safety packaging, and it is not a health guarantee.

Is MADE SAFE the same as EWG VERIFIED®?
No. They are separate programs run by separate organizations with separate criteria. We are not affiliated with either one. Every product in this guide is presented on its MADE SAFE® basis alone.

Are these cleaning products fragrance-free?
Not all of them. The Meliora laundry powder listing is the Unscented version, and Branch Basics lists no fragrance or essential oils in the Concentrate. The Meliora scrub listing is Peppermint Tea Tree, which is scented.

Do MADE SAFE certified cleaners disinfect?
MADE SAFE does not certify disinfection or germ-killing. None of these products is sold here as a disinfectant, and we make no such claim for them.

Can I use these around a baby?
We make no health or safety claims about any product. Read each label, follow its directions, rinse surfaces as directed, and keep all cleaners and powders out of children's reach. Ask your pediatrician if you have questions about your child.
