When someone in your household has asthma, eczema, or just a strong reaction to perfumed products, switching to fragrance free cleaning products is often the first thing doctors and allergists recommend. The challenge: fragrance-free doesn’t always mean much without independent verification. A product can skip the added scent and still include surfactants, preservatives, or optical brighteners that EWG flags as concerns. This guide covers fragrance-free cleaning picks that have been independently evaluated by EWG — either through the EWG VERIFIED® program or the EWG Guide to Healthy Cleaning, which grades products A through F based on ingredient hazard and disclosure.

Why Fragrance Is a Concern in Cleaning Products
Synthetic fragrance is one of the most commonly flagged ingredients in EWG’s Guide to Healthy Cleaning. When a label lists “fragrance” or “parfum,” it can represent dozens of undisclosed chemical compounds, because fragrance formulas are protected as trade secrets under U.S. law. EWG’s analysis has found that fragrance-containing cleaners can emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into indoor air, and some fragrance components have been associated with respiratory sensitization and allergic contact dermatitis.
For sensitive households — those with asthma, eczema-prone skin, chemical sensitivities, or young children who spend more time on floors and touch more surfaces — choosing cleaning products with no synthetic fragrance that have been verified by a credible third party is a well-supported step. None of the products below contain synthetic fragrance, and each has been independently evaluated by EWG.
How EWG Rates Fragrance-Free Cleaning Products
EWG uses two systems for household cleaners:
- EWG VERIFIED® is the strictest designation EWG awards. Products must disclose every ingredient (including any fragrance components), contain no ingredients on EWG’s Unacceptable list, and pass independent review by EWG. This goes beyond a letter grade because it requires full ingredient transparency — transparency that U.S. law doesn’t actually require for cleaning products.
- EWG Guide to Healthy Cleaning grades cleaners A through F based on ingredient hazard, ingredient disclosure, and formulation concern. Grade A products have lower-hazard ingredients and better ingredient transparency. A Grade A designation is meaningful, but it is not the same as EWG VERIFIED®.
Each product in this guide is labeled with its actual EWG status. We don’t use the phrase “EWG-certified” or “certified safe” — EWG uses neither, and neither do we.
Best Fragrance-Free Cleaning Products Rated by EWG
Multi-Surface / All-Purpose: Branch Basics Surface Cleaning Kit
Branch Basics is built around a single concentrate that you dilute into different spray solutions: all-purpose, glass, bathroom, and laundry. The Surface Cleaning Kit packages 33.8 oz of concentrate with a set of refillable bottles labeled by task. Because one bottle replaces four or five products in your cleaning cabinet, the $67 price works out to considerably less per ounce than buying individual sprays — closer to $0.05–$0.10 per diluted-bottle fill depending on the task formula.
EWG status: The Branch Basics Concentrate inside this kit carries the EWG VERIFIED® designation. The concentrate is the EWG VERIFIED® product; the kit bundle listing is not separately EWG VERIFIED®.
Also certified: MadeSafe, Leaping Bunny, made in the USA
Key free-froms: Fragrance-free, dye-free, phosphate-free, glycol ether-free, free of every ingredient on EWG’s Unacceptable list
Best for: Households switching their whole cleaning cabinet at once; refillable low-waste routines; EWG VERIFIED® priority shoppers

If EWG VERIFIED® isn’t the priority but a Grade A evaluation is, Seventh Generation’s EasyDose is the practical choice. The ultra-concentrated format also means less plastic per load than standard-size detergent bottles.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Is “fragrance-free” the same as “unscented”?
Not always. Fragrance-free means no fragrance compounds were added. Unscented sometimes means a masking fragrance was used to cover the natural smell of ingredients — so the product has no perceptible scent but still contains fragrance chemicals. If you’re specifically avoiding fragrance compounds, look for “fragrance-free” rather than just “unscented.” All five products in this guide are genuinely fragrance-free.
Q: Do these fragrance-free cleaning products actually work?
For standard household tasks — wiping surfaces, washing dishes, doing laundry — yes. Plant-derived and mineral surfactants in EWG VERIFIED® and Grade A products are effective for routine cleaning. If you’re tackling heavy-duty grease or need to kill pathogens (disinfection vs. cleaning), you may need an additional product for that specific task. EWG distinguishes between cleaners and disinfectants; most EWG VERIFIED® products are cleaners.
Q: What does EWG VERIFIED® mean for a cleaning product?
EWG VERIFIED® is the strictest designation EWG awards. A cleaning product must: (1) contain no ingredients on EWG’s Unacceptable list, (2) fully disclose all ingredients including any fragrance components directly to EWG, and (3) pass independent review. The full-disclosure requirement is especially significant because U.S. law does not require cleaning product manufacturers to list all ingredients on the label. EWG VERIFIED® closes that gap.
Q: Why aren’t some popular “green” cleaning brands on this list?
This list includes only products with a confirmed EWG VERIFIED® designation or EWG Guide Grade A, verified as in-stock on Amazon on the research date. Some well-known natural cleaning brands rate Grade B or C in EWG’s database — not because they’re problematic, but because EWG’s Grade A threshold is specific. Other products passed EWG but were out of stock at the time of research. We re-verify stock status before publishing, and we won’t link to a product that isn’t reliably available.
Switching your cleaning cabinet to fragrance-free, EWG-rated products doesn’t have to happen all at once. The picks above cover the highest-use categories — multi-surface, dish soap, dishwasher, and laundry — which together account for most of a household’s cleaning product exposure. Start with one category, and go from there.
