An "organic waterproof mattress protector" is not made of cotton alone. Cotton can absorb moisture, but a protector needs a barrier to stop it. The useful questions are what certification evidence exists for the exact product, whether the membrane is disclosed, how deep the fitted skirt runs and how it must be washed.

We found three adult queen protectors with current Amazon listings and exact certifier evidence: Happsy, Naturepedic and Avocado. Naturepedic and Avocado also publish exact product specifications. We excluded toppers and marketplace products whose certification scope was unclear.

Happsy: simple fitted coverage

UL SPOT lists the exact Happsy Organic Mattress Protector Pad (all sizes) with GREENGUARD Gold certification. We did not find primary evidence tying this protector to a finished-product GOTS claim, so we do not make one here.

The Amazon API title identifies the queen as a 60 x 80-inch elastic fitted, machine-washable waterproof protector, and its captured features list fit up to 15 inches deep. The listing does not identify the barrier material, so ask Happsy before buying if that detail matters to you.

Naturepedic: the clearest TPU disclosure

Naturepedic's current product specification names GOTS-certified organic cotton and a GOTS-allowed thermoplastic polyurethane, or TPU, waterproof layer. The queen SKU is PQ83W at 60 x 80 inches. Its GOTS scope certificate separately includes "Mattresses: Pads (Including Waterproof)" under the organic label grade.

Naturepedic says the pad can be machine washed and dried.

Avocado: organic cotton around a disclosed barrier

The Avocado product page describes two organic cotton layers around a thin polyurethane membrane made with Susterra propanediol derived from cornstarch. "Plant-based" describes part of the membrane feedstock; it does not mean the membrane is cotton or plastic-free.

Avocado identifies the finished protector as GOTS certified. The queen measures 60 x 80 inches; the Amazon variant lists fit for mattresses 6–16 inches deep. Care is machine wash and tumble dry low or line dry, without bleach.

What "GOTS certified" means here

GOTS sets rules for organic fiber content, processing inputs, labeling and certified supply chains. It can allow limited accessory materials needed for function. For a waterproof protector, the claim should be tied to the finished product or a scope that explicitly includes waterproof pads - not inferred from an organic-cotton top surface.

GREENGUARD Gold is the basis stated only for Happsy here, and it answers another question: chemical emissions from the finished product. Neither mark guarantees spill performance, quietness, cooling or durability. Those require product specifications and, ideally, independent performance testing.

NonToxicFinder is not affiliated with GOTS or UL Solutions. Use the official GOTS supplier database and UL SPOT registry to verify a different product or a future change.

Fit and laundering matter as much as the badge

Measure the mattress height after adding any separate topper. A skirt that is too shallow can pull free at the corners; one that is much deeper may bunch. Follow the delivered care label, because high heat can shorten the life of a thin waterproof membrane. See our MADE SAFE Certified Mattress Pad Protector: Avocado Organic Cotton Spotlight.

For the surrounding bed, compare the separate GOTS organic sheets guide. If you are still choosing the mattress itself, our certified adult mattress comparison keeps those constructions distinct from protectors. If you need a crib-size pad instead of this queen-size lineup, see our crib mattress pad swap guide. See our MADE SAFE Certified Pillow Protector: Naturepedic Spotlight.

Frequently asked questions

Can an organic mattress protector be waterproof?
Yes. The textile can be organic while a permitted synthetic membrane provides the waterproof function. Confirm the membrane for the exact product rather than inferring it from an organic-cotton claim.

Does GOTS mean 100 percent organic cotton?
No. Check the labeled fiber percentage and disclosed accessory materials for the exact product.

Is a protector the same as a topper?
No. A protector primarily guards the mattress; a topper changes comfort and height.
