Most scented candles are made with fragrance blends that list "fragrance" as a single ingredient, concealing dozens of undisclosed chemicals. EWG's Skin Deep® database flags synthetic fragrance as one of its most common high-concern ingredients, citing endocrine-disrupting compounds and persistent synthetic musks. The brands in this guide have gone further with third-party ingredient certification: Fontana Candle Co. holds MADE SAFE® certification for its candle line (a rigorous ingredient-by-ingredient review against a database of known hazardous substances), and Henry Rose holds EWG VERIFIED® status (full ingredient disclosure to EWG scientists, excluding every ingredient on EWG's Unacceptable list). These are two separate programs from two different nonprofits — we describe each accurately for each brand.

Non-toxic candles with rigorous third-party certification are still a small category. What we found: four products from Fontana Candle Co. (MADE SAFE® Certified) and one from Henry Rose (EWG VERIFIED®), covering a range of scents, price points, and use cases. We've also included a section on air fresheners, because the honest answer about that category is worth knowing before you shop.
What Third-Party Certification Looks for in Candle Ingredients
Both MADE SAFE® and EWG VERIFIED® require brands to disclose every ingredient, including fragrance components, for independent review. Both programs exclude products containing ingredients on their respective lists of unacceptable substances — compounds associated with endocrine disruption, carcinogenicity, and skin sensitization.
For candles specifically, the shared ingredient concerns include:
- Synthetic fragrance: The most-flagged candle ingredient by EWG. "Fragrance" or "parfum" on a label can conceal hundreds of undisclosed chemicals. MADE SAFE® and EWG VERIFIED® products must disclose fragrance components at the ingredient level.
- Paraffin wax: A petroleum byproduct. Not inherently high-hazard per EWG, but certified candles in this guide use beeswax, soy, or coconut wax blends instead.
- Lead or metal core wicks: Largely phased out in the U.S. after a 2003 CPSC ruling, but still present in some imported candles. Certified candles use cotton or wood wicks.
- Synthetic dyes: Some candle colorants are petroleum-based and rated moderate concern by EWG.

Wax Melts: The Flame-Free Option
Wax melts used with an electric wax warmer produce scent without combustion. For households with young children, pets, or spaces where open flames aren't practical, they're the cleaner choice. Fontana makes a MADE SAFE® certified wax melt that uses the same beeswax-and-essential-oil formula as their candles.
4. Fontana Candle Co. Non-Toxic Wax Melts, Cinnamon Orange, 3 Pucks: MADE SAFE® Certified
These beeswax wax melts work with any standard electric wax warmer. Three pucks in the same Cinnamon Orange scent as the wood wick candle. No synthetic fragrance, no paraffin, no lead. MADE SAFE® certified. At roughly $14 for three pucks, they're the most affordable entry into Fontana's certified candle line.

About Air Fresheners: Why the Category Is So Difficult
If you searched for "non-toxic air fresheners," you've probably already noticed the gap. There are no EWG VERIFIED® plug-in or spray air fresheners. The reason is the ingredient chemistry: nearly every conventional air freshener relies on synthetic fragrance to deliver its scent, and synthetic fragrance (the catch-all "fragrance" or "parfum" on an ingredient label) is exactly what EWG's VERIFIED® program requires to be fully disclosed and vetted.
Febreze and Glade products score D or F in EWG's Guide to Healthy Cleaning. EWG's concerns focus on undisclosed fragrance ingredients that may include phthalates, volatile organic compounds, and synthetic musks that persist in indoor environments.
MADE SAFE® certified wax melts are the most practical clean path for ambient room scent. An electric wax warmer with Fontana's beeswax wax melts functions similarly to a plug-in air freshener without the propellants, synthetic fragrance, or D-grade chemistry. Essential oil diffusers are another direction, but those products are rated individually by EWG's Skin Deep® database and fall outside the scope of this article.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What's the difference between MADE SAFE® and EWG VERIFIED®?
Both are independent third-party certification programs that require ingredient disclosure and ban substances linked to health concerns. They are run by different nonprofits with different review standards. In this guide, Fontana Candle Co.'s candle line holds MADE SAFE® certification; Henry Rose holds EWG VERIFIED® status. We describe each certification accurately for each brand and do not apply one label to products covered by another.
Q: Are beeswax candles better than soy wax candles per EWG?
EWG does not rank wax types head to head. Both beeswax and soy wax are used in certified candles. The ingredient concern EWG cites most often for candles is synthetic fragrance, not wax type. What matters is whether the full formulation is disclosed and passes independent review.
Q: Do non-toxic certified candles scent a room as well as conventional candles?
It depends on the scent throw you're accustomed to from synthetic fragrance oils. Essential-oil-scented beeswax candles like Fontana's tend toward a softer, more natural scent throw. If you're transitioning from heavily fragranced paraffin candles, the shift is noticeable and some people prefer it; others find it subtler than what they're used to.
Q: Can I use wax melts with any warmer?
Yes. Standard electric wax warmers work with any wax melt puck. No open flame is required for electric warmers, making them the practical option for households with young children or pets.
