If you are asking whether Purex laundry detergent is safe, you are probably standing in the laundry aisle with a $10 jug in one hand and a worry in the other. We cannot give you a safety verdict, and no website honestly can. What we can do is show you what Purex publishes about its Free & Clear liquid, tell you plainly what we could not confirm, and point to three alternatives that each carry a mark you can check yourself.

Why parents ask about Purex

Purex sells for less per load than most brands, and it is a common pick for baby clothes because the Free & Clear line is marketed without perfume or dyes. That combination of low price and a gentle-sounding name is exactly why people want a second opinion. The question is rarely "is this brand scary." It is "what is actually in the jug, and is there something better for about the same money." See our Is Arm & Hammer Laundry Detergent Safe? EWG Grades Run A to F.

What Purex says about its Free & Clear liquid

We read the maker's page for Purex Free & Clear liquid laundry detergent, 150 fluid ounces, 115 loads, on dialprofessional.com (Dial, the company behind Purex) on October 18, 2026. Here is what it says and what it leaves out:

  • The maker describes the product as made with "hypoallergenic ingredients" and says it works "without the perfume or dyes." Those are the maker's claims, not ours.
  • The page does not print an ingredient list. The maker points shoppers to the product label or its consumer line at 1-877-777-3277.
  • The page does not mention any third-party certification mark.

Because the maker page lists no ingredients, we are not reproducing an ingredient list here. Lists copied from retailer sites can be outdated or belong to a different size or version, and we would rather send you to the jug in your laundry room than guess. When you read the label, look for whether fragrance is listed, whether a fluorescent brightener is listed, and which preservative is used. Those three lines tell you the most about how a detergent differs from the others on the shelf. The same goes for Purex's scented lines, such as Natural Elements: read the label on the exact bottle you own.

What we could and could not confirm about EWG ratings

EWG, the Environmental Working Group, is an independent nonprofit that rates cleaning products in its Guide to Healthy Cleaning and awards the EWG VERIFIED® mark to qualifying products. We cannot read ewg.org from our research tools, so we have not confirmed an EWG grade for any Purex product, and we are not going to state one. If you want to check, search the exact product name at ewg.org/cleaners and read the page yourself.

Keep in mind that EWG ratings reflect EWG's own method for scoring ingredient disclosure and hazard data. They are not safety guarantees, and neither are the marks below. We make no health or safety claims of our own.

What the marks below mean

Each product in this article lists exactly one basis, so you can compare like with like.

  • MADE SAFE: a certification from the nonprofit MADE SAFE that screens a product's ingredients against its own criteria. It is a separate organization from EWG. It does not cover how a product performs, and it is not a guarantee about any individual's health.
  • EWG VERIFIED®: a mark from EWG for products that meet its criteria, including full ingredient disclosure. It applies to the products that carry it, not to a whole brand, and it does not guarantee health outcomes.

Three laundry detergents with a mark you can check

Meliora Laundry Powder, Unscented, 128 HE Loads (ASIN: B01DC1D4JM, $25.44), MADE SAFE

The lowest price per load of the three at about $0.20. Meliora is a concentrated powder you scoop, and the unscented version suits households that want no fragrance at all. Basis: the MADE SAFE registry lists Meliora Laundry Powder, including the unscented version, at index.madeworks.com. Powder dissolves best in warm water, so cold-water washers may want to dissolve it first.

ATTITUDE Liquid Laundry Detergent, Mountain Fresh, 40 Loads (ASIN: B093TMXZ4G, $19.95), EWG VERIFIED®

The closest swap for someone who wants to stay with a liquid and a light scent. Basis: ATTITUDE's maker page shows the EWG VERIFIED® mark on its Mountain Fresh liquid laundry line at attitudeliving.com. The maker page we read showed a larger size, and the Amazon listing for this 40-load bottle names EWG Verified in its title, so check the badge on the bottle you receive. About $0.50 per load.

AspenClean Laundry Detergent Pods, Unscented, 36 Count (ASIN: B0B11MHDX1, $23.99), EWG VERIFIED®

Pods for people who value convenience, with no measuring. Basis: AspenClean's maker page for its unscented laundry pods shows the EWG Verified badge at aspenclean.com. About $0.67 per pod, the priciest per wash here. As with any laundry pod, keep them sealed and out of children's reach.

Switching from Purex

You do not need to throw out a half-full jug. Finish it, then switch. If you are moving to a powder, run the first load with the amount on the scoop guide rather than eyeballing it. Cost is the real tradeoff: Meliora is the cheapest per load of the three at about $0.20, while the two EWG VERIFIED® picks cost more per wash, so compare against what you pay for Purex today. Frequently asked questions

Is Purex Free & Clear fragrance-free?
The maker says it is made "without the perfume or dyes." That is the maker's statement. Check the label on your bottle to confirm.

Does EWG certify laundry detergents?
EWG grades cleaning products in its Guide to Healthy Cleaning and awards the EWG VERIFIED® mark to qualifying products. Neither is a safety guarantee. We have not confirmed an EWG grade for any Purex product.

Is MADE SAFE the same as EWG?
No. MADE SAFE is a separate nonprofit with its own ingredient criteria. We are not affiliated with either organization.

Is Purex Natural Elements different from Free & Clear?
They are different product lines with different formulas, and Natural Elements is scented. Read the label on the exact bottle you own.

Why does Purex say hypoallergenic?
That is the maker's own wording on its product page. It is not a claim we make, and the maker page does not say what testing sits behind it.
