Is Gain detergent toxic? EWG does not give Gain one grade. The Gain laundry records we checked range from C to F depending on formula and scent, and none carries EWG VERIFIED®. That is a hazard-and-disclosure rating, not evidence that wearing clothes washed in Gain will harm you.

If you searched "is Gain laundry detergent toxic," start with the full name on your container. A grade for Botanicals does not describe every Flings product, and a Flings record does not automatically describe a liquid bottle with the same scent.

These are individual records in EWG's Guide to Healthy Cleaning, checked September 20, 2026. Follow the product links to compare the listed ingredients with your package.

Exact EWG listingEWG ratingWhat to check
Flings Liquid Laundry Detergent, Fresh SplashCFresh Splash, not another Flings scent.
Flings Liquid Laundry Detergent, Tropical SunriseCMatch the formula as well as the scent.
Flings Liquid Laundry Detergent, Island FreshDThis is the Flings record.
Botanicals Plant Based Laundry Detergent, White Tea & LavenderFThe plant-based wording does not establish a lower grade.

The Fresh Splash record was updated June 5, 2026 and describes its ingredient disclosure as "some." The table is a selection of checked records, not a grade for the entire Gain range or confirmation that every listed formula remains on store shelves.

Read the grade without turning it into a health prediction

EWG's scoring method considers ingredient hazards and disclosure. Its cleaning ratings do not account for your actual exposure or individual susceptibility. They also do not measure stain removal, how much detergent remains after a particular wash, or whether a scent will bother you.

None of the four records above displays the EWG VERIFIED® designation. That designation is separate from a letter grade. A C rating is not certification, and the F rating for one Botanicals formula is not evidence that all plant-derived detergents share its rating.

Check the product you are actually using

Gain's own product pages distinguish Island Fresh Flings pacs from Island Fresh liquid detergent. That distinction matters even when the scent name and package colors look familiar.

  1. Write down the complete name, scent and format. Include words such as Botanicals or Plus.
  2. Open the matching EWG record and compare its ingredient list with the package or manufacturer's ingredient information.
  3. If they differ, read the grade as a finding about the listed formula. Do not assume it describes your newer purchase.

A shelf full of matching green containers can make this feel unnecessarily fussy. Photographing the front and ingredient panel once gives you something concrete to compare on your next purchase.

One unscented option with a separate verification record

For a switch, ATTITUDE Little Ones Nature + Laundry Detergent, 80 Loads, Unscented is listed as EWG VERIFIED®. The record's update date is June 16, 2022, so check the current label against it. The corresponding retail listing is sold as ATTITUDE Baby Laundry Detergent, Unscented, 80 Loads.

Check the ATTITUDE unscented 80-load bottle on Amazon. Compare the actual price per labeled load with what you buy now; a larger bottle or the word "baby" is not itself evidence of better value. Start with one bottle before committing to a refill or multipack.

For a wider selection, use our laundry detergent guide. This article is a Gain formula check, not a wash-performance test. We have not tested these detergents against each other.

Does a better EWG grade mean I need to replace everything?

The rating alone cannot answer that. Decide whether your next purchase needs to meet a particular certification standard, avoid added scent, or stay within a set cost per load. Those are separate choices. Our Tide comparison looks at another brand; use its exact product records rather than transferring a verdict between detergents.
