Quick Answer

Is Cetaphil non-toxic? It depends which Gentle Skin Cleanser record you check. EWG Skin Deep lists two records under that name: one rated 1 (low hazard, fair data) and one rated 3 (moderate concern), with different ingredients. The formula on Cetaphil's current US website matches the score-1 record. A separate product, Daily Facial Cleanser Fragrance Free, also scores 1.

Cetaphil does not carry the EWG VERIFIED® mark, so "is Cetaphil a clean brand" cannot be answered for the whole lineup with one number. That is the detail to check before replacing a cleanser that already works for you, and even a low EWG score is not a guarantee about your skin's response.

Is Cetaphil safe? Start with these cleanser records

We checked the following Skin Deep listings on September 20, 2026. Skin Deep uses a numeric hazard scale; these scores are ratings, not EWG VERIFIED® certification.

Exact EWG listingEWG ratingWhat to check
Gentle Skin Cleanser, record 10180371; fair dataLists glycerin, panthenol and niacinamide. Updated February 2023.
Gentle Skin Cleanser, record 94352903; good dataLists sodium lauryl sulfate and parabens. Updated March 2025.
Daily Facial Cleanser, Fragrance Free1; fair dataA different cleanser. Updated January 2022.

The newer database date does not identify the newer formula

The score-3 Gentle Skin Cleanser record has a later update date than the score-1 record. That can mislead someone who chooses whichever search result appears most recent. Compare ingredients instead.

Cetaphil's current US ingredient list includes glycerin, cetearyl alcohol, panthenol and niacinamide. Its full list matches the score-1 record we checked. The score-3 record describes a different list that includes sodium lauryl sulfate and methylparaben, propylparaben and butylparaben.

This comparison does not establish when your bottle was made. Older stock, products sold in another country and later reformulations still need their own label check. It does establish why quoting "Cetaphil scores 3" without identifying the formula is incomplete.

Gentle Skin Cleanser and Daily Facial Cleanser are different products

The names are close enough to mix up in a shopping cart. Cetaphil describes Gentle Skin Cleanser for normal to dry skin. The fragrance-free Daily Facial Cleanser retail listing is for combination to oily skin. Neither description establishes that one will suit you better.

If you are shopping for Daily Facial Cleanser, make sure the selected version explicitly says fragrance free. The score-1 record in our table names that version. It should not be transferred to every Daily Facial Cleanser listing or to another scent selection on the same retail page.

See Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser, Fragrance Free, 16 oz on Amazon. We checked the retail listing's fragrance-free description as well as its title, because the shorter title omits that distinction. Verify the selected version before checkout.

How much weight should a score of 1 carry?

EWG reports hazard scores alongside data availability. "Fair" data is not the same thing as comprehensive evidence, and the score does not predict an individual reaction. The difference between an EWG rating and EWG VERIFIED® matters here: none of these three records carries the verification designation.

If your shopping rule is specifically to buy EWG VERIFIED® products, use our face wash guide to compare alternatives. If your rule is to understand the ingredients and published rating of the cleanser you already use, the matching Gentle Skin Cleanser record gives you a more useful answer than a brand-wide warning.

A quick check before your next purchase

  • Match the whole product name, including "Daily," "Gentle" and "Fragrance Free."
  • Compare the complete ingredient panel, not just the first ingredient or bottle color.
  • Read both the hazard score and data availability on the linked record.
  • Compare price per ounce only after you know the bottles contain the version you want.

There is no reason to turn one cleanser question into an expensive replacement of your whole routine. If moisturizer is your next decision, our face moisturizer guide covers it separately. For a similar ingredient check on another doctor-recommended brand, see what EWG Skin Deep shows for CeraVe's cleansers and moisturizers. This comparison is based on published records and labels, not hands-on testing or an assessment of your skin.
